Schlenkerla Oak Smoked Doppelbock

Despite my scathing calumniation of Germany's Rieser Landbier, it's good to remember that in all things there should be balance, and I'm therefore pleased to report that this Schlenkerla Oak Smoke ale is something that our Teutonic friends have definitely got right! Boy, I could drink this 8% brew every day. A wonderfully fruity, smoky nose draws you in to a gorgeously deep amber colour with slight cloudiness, very low carbonation and low to moderate head retention. The flavour has a rounded, malty tartness with more than a hint of diacetyl and excellent Hallertau hop balance. Whilst it might be a bit too much for some palates (i.e.; my missers'), I absolutely loved this yeasty, two month matured ale. In my opinion this is the best oak smoked ale in the world.  Very Highly Recommended!
